Although it’s not nearly as big a celebration in the Netherlands as it is in the US, we also love Halloween here. Who doesn’t like a creepy costume party where the main goal is to collect as much candy as possible, while you scare the neighbors.
Going from door to door will not be there this year but you can also celebrate Halloween at home. With a scary movie of course, but not too scary. A creepy Disney movie for the whole family. All you need is a Disney Plus subscription and preferably a Smart TV, AppleTV or Chromecast. This way everyone can enjoy and be creeped out on TV.
Ready for some spooky Disney Films? These are the ones you don’t want to miss!
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Those who know me in real life know that I love this film. Everywhere in the house I have something of Jack and/or Sally.
The Nightmare before Christmas is about Jack, the Pumpkin King, who lives in perhaps the creepiest town on earth. Here they know how to celebrate Halloween, but they’ve never heard of Christmas. Until one day, by chance, Jack finds out about this holiday and decides he wants to celebrate it too, in his own creepy way.
This is a really great movie full of music and every now and then really scary scenes. This film is suitable for children from the age of 6, but know that it can be really spooky from time to time.
This is a real Disney cult film that, coincidentally, was made in exactly the same year as the Disney spooky film above.
This time no animation but a film with real actors and actresses. With a very young Sarah Jessica Parker, yes, the one from that very famous series.
In Hocus Pocus you follow the 3 witch sisters who came to their end centuries ago, but are summoned from the dead by teenagers. They want nothing more than to control the city and find their youth, which of course ends in a complete fiasco.
Is it the best Disney movie, or even best Disney horror movie, no. But as a Disney fan, it is definitely a movie that you should have seen once. Did you know that this movie is still so popular that the sisters used to have their own show every year in front of the castle of Magic Kingdom Park in Walt Disney World?
Frankenweenie is in a similar style as The Nightmare Before Christmas. Not surprising, because both films are directed by Tim Burton.
In this story something happens that many of us fear: our beloved pet dies. But what if you can bring him or her back from the dead? Victor succeeds in resurrecting his beloved Sparky as a true Frankenweenie. But as sweet as this sounds, does it end well?
A cute film about the love between a boy and his dog. Every now and then some spooky scenes but otherwise a film for the whole thing.
Toy Story of Terror
I find this short Toy Story film truly terrifying. Pretty creepy, even for an adult. Ok, maybe I’m exaggerating a bit, but there are scenes in it that could come right out of a horror movie.
In Toy Story of Terror Woody, Jessie, Buzz and all the other toys go on a trip. But because of a mistake they have to spend the night in a spooky motel. And then the friends disappear, one by one. They manage to survive and find the other “toys”.
Personally I really like this Disney movie and it’s one I like to watch around Halloween.
In this list, the film, which revolves around the day of the dead, should not be missing. If you would ask me which recent Disney movie you really should see, I would say Coco. Oh what have I cried…
In this film you follow Miguel, Coco’s grandson. He wants to become a musician but his family doesn’t want him to. Coco’s father was a musician and he left the family. He went on tour and never came back. Miguel, who doesn’t listen to the objections of his family, steals the guitar of a deceased star and accidentally ends up in the realm of the dead. Can he, with the help of his deceased loved ones, return to the living world?
What a wonderful film this is. Full of love, music, family, and a very wise lesson. That we shouldn’t forget our loved ones – even after their death. And the end…put the handkerchiefs ready for that!
These were 5 nice Disney movies you can watch during Halloween. To watch these movies you need a subscription to Disney Plus.
